TWP 1500 Series 5 Gallons Deck Stain
Hello –
I recently had a fence installed with pressure treated (copper) rough sawn cut red pine. How long before I can stain with 1500 series? I would like to do ASAP to avoid any cleaning etc. Thanks!
If it is a rough-sawn cut, you can stain it now.
Will chlorine effect the stain?Used 1500 series (natural) on my other deck and want to use the same on my pool deck.
If splashed on a deck, chlorine will degrade or lighten it. No exterior stain is immune to chlorine/bleach.
Hello. I over purchased TWP 1500.
How long will this last if I keep unopened in my basement?
2-3 years.
Hi, How do I know if I need 1 or 2 coats on a deck surface? The deck is old, but in decent shape and homeowner told me it was stained with TWP about 3 ago. I intend to prep with the RAD combo system before stain. Since it already was previously stained, do I only need 1 coat? Or do 2 because it is old?
Most likley, 2 light coats applied wet on wet.
How do you calculate square footage of railings with spindles (all wood) to calc the number of gallons needed for non-deck surfaces?

Hi,
Help! I had a brand new deck stained by a professional yesterday who used a sprayer then wiped by hand with a towel. I asked him to apply with a brush instead; he didn’t. The product used was TWP-1501-5 on pressure treated pine. 20 hrs has past and it still looks wet and very blotchy. Can someone tell me if this the norm or was it applied incorrectly? I want to gather as much information as possible before I complain and request correction. From what I’ve read so far it has been applied too heavily??? How should it be corrected? Thanks in advance! Love the product but too blotchy and uneven…ugh

I may need a few more days to cure and dry.
Thanks for the response. I read the article and will give it a few days.
Hello,
I can not remember if I used Redwood or Rustic stain the last time. We have power washed our deck and are ready to stain. Will it make a huge difference if I use a different stain this time, it looks like they are very similar in color. Thanks!
Yes, it may have an uneven appearance. Post a picture in the comments so we can help.
why is it so hard to find the square footage. it should state that in the key features
It is under the technical info tab above.😀Very easy to find.
Hello. I live in the northeast and have a large pressure treated deck (~1700 sq ft) that has previously been stained with a semi-solid product. Half the deck is mostly in the sun and the other half mostly in the shade. The old stain has chipped off over the years; it was most previously stained about 13 years ago. I have pressure washed the deck, replaced some old boards and will sand the deck in the coming weeks. I have some rough areas where splintering has begun to show and thus want to sand. I am looking for deep penetrating oil type products that wont’s peel and that I can reapply every few years with limited prep work. Is TWP 1700 a product that could work for me?
Yes, the TWP 1500 is the correct product. Make sure to thoroughly remove the old stain, and, after sanding, clean and brighten for final prep.
Hello, see attached a photo of the fence. Recently bought a house and wanted to make sure the fence is taken care of. No idea what the past owners have done, but the fence is 5 years old. Was looking at this product, but wanted to know what prep should be done. Thank you!
It looks like it has a stain on it. Could you post a close-up of the wood?
Will respond when we have closed on the house.
I have a cabin with log siding in northern WI that had been neglected for some time. I have attached a picture for reference. If I have the process correct, I would need to apply the stripper, then brightener, then re-stain (thinking the 1500 series)? Is there no need for any sort of top coat for moisture?
What stain was used prior as it looks film forming, almost like a varnish. You cannot strip varnish with a deck stain stripper. You may need to media blast to remove fully before using the 1500 Series.
FYI, you cannot top coat over the TWP stains. No need.
I finished up with RAD stripper and brightener and down to bare wood, how long do I have before I apply 1500? Forecast looks rainy this week…
Wait 48 hours after prep or any rain. Stain within 2 weeks for prep.
Thanks, so let’s say I don’t get a good window within that 2 week period. What will I need to do after that? 48 prior and 24 post without rain has been hard to come by lately. I’ve got 800sq ft plus rails to get done. Decks look good now but the weather pattern looks rainy! Thanks again.
Reapply the Brighener and light pressure wash.
Ok. Can I use some generic oxalic acid or is the RAD brightener different? I can grab some oxalic acid at the local hardware stor quickly if needed. I appreciate the help.
Use the RAD Brightener. Straight oxalic is too aggressive.
How best to remove excess stain that has been “dry” for a week. There is a tackiness that wont come off with a cloth. I read that you can reapply the stain to loosen it up they wipe off or to use mineral salts. Please advise thank you!

Do not apply more stain. That would make it worse.
Can I apply TWP1500 to a brand new Cedar deck?
After wait and prep. See here: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
I’m looking to have my 25 year old deck redone with the 1500 semi-transparent redwood stain, it was stained with Benjamin Moore arbor coat semi-solid stain 2 years ago and is peeling badly. Would sanding followed by the brightener be recommended over the stripper/brightener?
This is a solid opaque stain in appearance. A deck stain stripper cannot remove it. Power sanding or the RAD PaintStrip:
https://www.twpstain.com/rad-paint-solid-stain-stripper-5-gallon
Brightener after.
Which product is best for a 3-1/2 year cedar deck in Lake of the Ozark, Missouri. We have a lot of oak trees around us and the huge lake. We need a product that will allow us lower maintenance. Right now we clean it every spring, however it needs it twice a year to help it look almost new.
Use the TWP 1500 Series for this deck.
We have new and old boards. Which of your products will totally cover both?
See here first about new wood:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
To get it as even as possible for appearance, use the semi-solid colors:
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
I used the 1500 last year to do my daughters deck, and it worked out fine. Now I need to do my new 16×28 deck. My wife would like grey stain. Is there a grey stain available?
Look at the Semi-Solid colors.
How do you cleanup 1500 series drips and overspray from a pond’s rubber liner? Can you use baking soda? The SDS says no strong alkali, but baking soda is pH 8-8.5 so not strong, correct? NOTE: I also saw ammonia suggested for glass, but one would NOT want to use ammonia in a pond.
Sorry but we have no idea what would work on your rubber liner and not harm it.
I see that the temperature needs to be above 50° during application. How long after application does it need to be above that temperature? Also, how long does it need to be dry after application? In other words, if it rains and gets wet will that affect the efficacy?
It cannot drop below 40 for at least 24 hours and it can take a day or two to fully dry in colder temps.
What about rain?
Cannot rain until fully dry.
How many sq. ft. does 5 gallons cover with 1 coat.
Coverage Per Gallon: 150-250 square feet per gallon per coat.
I have a pressure treated Pergola that has been weathered, cleaned, brightened and is ready for stain. I live in North Carolina and it gets sun all day long. Which product will last the longest in the heavy sun. I would rather not have to clean, brighten and stain every year or two if possible.
Try the semi-solid colors:
https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
Hey Pete, whatever you do, don’t cut corners on the brightener. The cleaner the wood gets the better it will absorb. The good thing about guys at TWP is they will inform, but aren’t desperate to sell you just anything. My deck has intermittent daily sun depending on the season but I’ve got great shade. If I were you I’d get their recommendation and also ask if a third coat might help delay another application next year.
Hope it goes well for you!
P
How many sq feet does 5 gallons cover? I’m staining my deck 350 sq feet and want to do 2 coats of black walnut. I’m happy with color sample.
3-4 gallons for 350 sq feet and two coats.
That last sentence should have said TWP 1500 Stain. Sorry
We have a sinker cypress porch floor that was installed in 2014. We have used TWP 1500 series since installation and love the color and UV protection. Our problems are scratches from our pups and indentations from high heels. Can a clear marine varnish be applied over the TWM 1500 series stain?
No. TWP cannot be top-coated. It will peel if you apply a marine varnish.
We have a Missouri red cedar deck and have used cedar tone on it in the past but it doesn’t give it the red color. It is orange/brown. I was going to use clear but understand it would have no UV protection. Would the natural color work and keep it more like the wood and give protection. I’m getting ready to strip the old color and brighten it with restore a deck products. Waiting on a little cooler weather and it’s coming. It’s a big project. I was going to let it gray but hubby wants nothing to do with that. We’ve always used TWP but not pleased the past time with colo.
Test samples as colors vary drastically based on wood type and the age of the wood:
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Natural is not clear but tinted.
I have a fence that requires staining. Side 1 was built 5 years ago, currently has old PPG stain on it (we do not like the color). Side 2 was built 3 years ago and has never been stained. Side 3 and Side 4 were built one month ago, no not stained. As I try to follow your prep and stain practices, I am trying to figure out the correct timeline for staining my entire fence at one time. Do I need to wait so the new wood is aged and start with the Gemini and follow with TWP 1500?
The PPG has to come off. Post pics for tips. The new wood was to weather and be prepped unless it is rough sawn cut:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
The pickets are rough sawn. The posts and braces are not.
Then you have to weather and prep as the article link explains.
Personally, I’m partial to the 1530 natural. However given the intensity of the Arizona son, these guys might have better suggestions for preserving wood health and fade avoidance.
I would like to protect the wood (inc. UV protection) and keep mostly the current color. What product is the best for AZ?
The TWP 1500 Series.
Greetings, Installed brand new pressure treated pine deck 4 months a go. Prior to staining what would you recommend on how to properly clean it. Thanks

Do I need to prep a ponderosa pine fence, wood cut fall 2022, milled March 2023, constructed July 2023? The wood is seeping small beads of sap which has greatly slowed in the month since construction and hot day and sun exposure. Do I need to apply one or two coats?
See this about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
If your wood is rough sawn cut, you an stain now and apply 2 coats wet on wet.
I have a house with cedar siding that I guess had some sort of polyurethane protecting it. It badly needed some care, especially on the south side, having turned dark gray there.
I had someone corn blast off the previous finish and the next step will be to sand off the bits that the corn blasting didn’t get and smooth out the surface. The wood is looking much brighter now, much closer to new.
I want to stain with TWP 1500 natural, and I’m wondering what to do for the next step.
Q1: Do I need to do Gemini Restore-A-Deck Kit steps 1 and 2 before I apply the TWP 1500 stain?
Q2: Do I apply one coat of TWP 1500 or two?
1. Post some pics of the prep.
2. Most likely two coats applied wet on wet.
You do not want the wood surface smooth. You want it porous. Do not sand finer than 60 grit.
Okay, here are some pics of the prep so far.
Looks good to stain now. You will need two coats applied wet on wet.
Hi. My redwood deck is 2.5 years old, and was stain with TWP1511 in spring 2021. After two years area that is exposed to the elements have lost its water protection capability while area under arbor still look good.
You have previously advised me to use gemini restore kit to prep the deck before restaining.
Q1: My painter said I need to power wash the deck after applying the restore kit? Is it correct?
Q2: I have tried experimenting restaining two planks without the restore kit. See photo. It seems ok. Do I have to use the restore kit? What’s the purpose of it.
Q3: Do I need to use the restore kit on the area under cover that still look good?
1. Yes.
2. Yes, you have to prep. You cannot stain without prepping first. Leads to premature failure and unevenness.
3. Yes everywhere.
The number one reason for stain failure is not prepping correctly. Don’t skip the steps to save a few dollars.
I am staining new, rough cut, western red cedar prior to assembly of a pergola. I live in Iowa. It will be in Southern exposure sun. What product do you recommend? I will need 6 gallons but prefer the gallon size over the 5 gallon size. Do you offer free shipping for 6 single gallons? If not what is estimated shipping to 52402? Thank you.
