We have used this product twice on our pressure-treated wood deck (. It applies easily and looks terrific when done. We are DIYers with limited experience with this sort of project, and had no trouble following the application directions. We had to address a lot of wood damage before applying it--severe UV damage, mold and mildew--but with the right prep, we couldn't be happier with the outcome. The second time we used it, we did over-apply a bit and had a lot of shiny excess stain after a few hours of drying. We read the tips here on the website and the next day we wiped off the excess using a light misting of mineral spirits and shop rags. Easy fix and it looks great. Never any peeling, which is just what we wanted, and it made our heavily damaged wood look better than we thought possible. I love finding a product that works as well as advertised.

We stripped and stained our deck with TWP 1500 series two years ago. We are getting ready to add another coat of stain this year. Will power washing be a sufficient prep or is your brightener necessary as well?

We had our brand new Ipe pool deck stained with 1500 Natural last February. It is time to restain. The deck has some black spots (possibly mildew?). Can we just go ahead and stain with the 1500 Natural or do we need any cleaners first? Thanks!

Is there any other product I could add over this to give the finish wood a semi-gloss or glossy look? I’m looking to stain a bench but also want a finish to it.

Sorry but no, you can never apply a coating over the TWP. It will peel.

What is the difference between the 100 and 1500 series? I’m about to paint or stain our deck (haven’t decided yet which one). A friend used the 116 rustic for a cedar look on his but I also saw the 1516 one as well. Just not sure what to use now.

We are having a colored Pine table being built for outdoors. See attached picture. The "blue" coloring will turn brown without protection. Was recommended by the shop to look at your product for a "wet on wet" protection. We live in Colorado at 7,500' elevation and the sun can be really tough on wood products. Want to get the best protection for uv and the wood, but be as clear as possible to enjoy the wood coloring. Thanks for your help!

I prepped my deck to be stained. I was ready to use anther product, until I came across TWP 1500 semi- transparent stain and the reviews. I live in northern Illinois, and can't use TWP 100.
I am considering TWP 1530 (natural) 0r TWP 1515 (Honeytone). How much darker is the Honeytone compared to the natural?

I used TWP on my deck over five years ago (too long I know) and I am now looking to re-stain. Which preparation would you recommend and how many coats of stain? Thanks

I already stripped the water based stain off my deck with a Behr stripper and will clean it using the Behr cleaner, brightener. Can I now use TWP 1500 stain after using these Behr products to strip and clean. Sorry, not optimal, but I just found out about your stain. I was going to use a Behr stain.

As long as it is cleaned well and free of previous coatings, you should be okay.

hi. i sanded the stain off of our mahogany deck with 40 grit and then 80 grit. Do I have to use a stripper because I realize there is stain between the deck boards that I can not sand off? Also, can I stain now or do I have to use a cleaner and brightener?

Clean and brighten after sanding. Nore sure if you need to stop between the boards but that would be up to you as it may show through.

Is there a clear twp 1500 stain? I live in Maine, so I can’t use the 100 series but would like to keep and preserve the weathered gray color on my existing cedar decks. I’m also putting in a new cedar deck, should I use a roller to cover the vertical sides of the wood before installing the deck on the pressure treated frame? thank you very much.

Clear is an option when you choose the color in the drop-down color choices. No need to coat the verticals prior.

WE have a 30 year old redwood deck and am happy to say that it has held up great using your products. However there is an area that gets more sun and weather and needs new boards to replace them. After sanding the old boards(testing on those removed) they absorb the stain(california redwood) very differently with some going redish or yellow and others going almost black. Is there a way to get a more consistent outcome with retaining? Is sanding an issue? Also worried about how to blend color with the new wood and how soon to apply stain on new wood?

    Any suggestions?

The fix for getting all boards to look the same is to use an interior hardwood stain on the new boards, let it dry for 24 - 48 hours and then apply TWP. Apply the Hardwood stain with a rag, lightly rubbing the color into the new boards; just like redoing hardwood in your home. This approach has wood great for me in replacing board for some of my customers.

You cannot apply the TWP over a hardwood interior stain.

For prep, you should strip and brighten the older wood, not sand. It is not possible though to get new wood to match older wood. The new wood will stain lighter since they are less absorbent.

Mold, not mild. Basically, I want to use your product to seal and protect. I just want to use the Minwax to color.

I want to stain my deck black. Can I mix Minwax True Black with your clear 1500?
    • We will reply to your comment shortly
      TWP Stains · 08/19/2020
No, you cannot use Minwax or any interior stain on exterior decking. It will not work or give any UV protection. You also can never top coat a clear sealer over a stain for exterior wood.

        Cristin · 08/19/2020
Thank you for your reply! Could you first use your product to seal and protect the wood from mild, mildew, etc. and then apply Minwax over that just for color? I understand it wouldn't offer protection, it would just be for aesthetics. The problem is that I can't find an oil based exterior stain in black.

On my deck there are some cracks that I applied wood filler to. Can the stain stick to the wood filler?
    • We will reply to your comment shortly
      TWP Stains · 08/08/2020
Sorry but wood filler does not work for deck stains. The stain will not "stain" the wood to blend and it will stand out.

We really like Dark Oak but need something in that same color but lighter for our front porch. Is it possible to mix Dark Oak and Natural for a lighter color?

Yes, you can mix but better to use the Clear, not Natural.

1501 Cedartone turned my western red cedar fence yellow. Do you think I got honeytone by mistake? It is quite yellow.

      TWP Stains · 07/16/2020
No, that would not be possible. Final color always varies based on the wood type and ager of the wood.
