TWP 1500 1 Gallon Stain
TWP 1500 is a Semi-transparent Oil-Based wood stain and preservative that is allowed in all 50 states.
The new TWP® 1500 formula is designed to penetrate better, dry faster and outperform the previous TWP® 500 series formula.
TWP® 1500 Series is an EPA registered wood preservative which prevents structural damage and wood decay on exterior above ground wood surfaces such as fencing, decking, wood siding, log homes, and roofing. TWP® 1500 Series resists water absorption that causes warping, cracking and splitting as well as preventing freeze damage in colder climates.

1500 Series and Deck Stain 1 Gallon
what stain series is best to resist white fungal growth. I am replacing some infected boards in a pergola and I want to apply a stain to old uninfected and new boards to guard against this problem.
TWP 1500 Series.
What do you recommend on whiskey barrels ?
The 1500 Series.
What would you recommend putting on some rocking chairs?
1500 Series.
We are using TWP 1500 Pecan for exterior cedar siding. Do we need to apply a clear top coat / seal on top of the stain?
No need and you cannot top coat over the TWP.
I have the 200 color 207 butternut brown on my deck and want to switch to the 1500 series. Which color is the closest to what I have now. It’s hard to tell by the swatches
Dark Oak but it is darker than Butternut. Make sure to strip and brighten for prep.
I have waited the appropriate amount of time for my new deck to be stained. I did the prep work with the Restore a deck cleaner and brightener. I couldn’t finish the entire deck (it’s quite large). Now I am waiting for the weather to give me a window between 48 after a rain and 48 hours before rain and above 50 degrees to finish the rest. Is there any wiggle room in these parameters? I live in upstate NY and I think I am running out of time and panicking that it will have to remain 3/4 finished and the other 1/4 will end up turning gray. Any tips or suggestions?
It must be 48 hours after prep or rain to stain. It can rain after applying about 12 hours later but that varies based on the temps.
What temperature is needed for 12 hours after application?
50-90 f.
Hi, what is the 1500 finish? It’s looks like shiny. We love the colors but my wife would prefer something flater/low lustre.
Thx!
Patrick
The TWP 1500 Series is a penetrating stain. It does not have a shine.
Do you have a recommendation for TWP 1500 stain for a mahogany deck?
Most use the Rustic color.
Does 1500 have linseed oil in it? I’m debating between 1500 and 200 on my log cabin and was told 200 has no linseed oil.
1500 is a blend of natural and synthetic oils. A very small amount of linseed. TWP 200 is paraffin-based.
Thanks – do you recommend one line over the other for log cabins?
The 200 is used more for shakes and shingles while the 1500 is used more for log cabins.
I have some hatchway doors being built to replace our old ones that are rotting. The new ones will be tongue and groove pine. My biggest fear is warping. Would it be ok to seal them with 1500 series before they get mounted? They are being assembled off-site.
New wood needs to weather and be prepped before applying TWP:

Do you recommend power-washing or sanding or otherwise prepping a mangaris fence (previously stained) or can the 1501 be applied over the top? Curious about the process and what additional cleaning/prep I may need to do before applying the 1501. Thanks.
Post pics and what stain brand and type was used prior?
Superdeck stain. Darker gate was refinished a year ago. The other/faded gate about two years ago. Want to use Dark Walnut 1504 to go darker.
Strip and brighten for prep with this kit:
https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
No need to sand.
How is this applied and removed? Brush and rags? Also, this is for a small project, can the stripper/brightener be saved or use less than the full amount?
You apply with a pump sprayer and then pressure wash off. You can save the prep products while in powder form for may years.
Thank you. And re: the 1501 stain, do I roll on and brush back? Or how best to apply? And one coat? Two? Thanks!

I rebuilt the posts and trimmed with new cedar of a 15 year old pergola. The upper portion is power washed and ready for 1500. How long should I wait to brighten and use 1500 on the new cedar posts? Located in Michigan.
See this about the new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
We clean and brighten our porch every year to prep for staining with TWP 100 series. This year, due to availability, we stained our porch with the 1500 series. We have been completely disappointed in the 1500 series and want to return back to the 100 series on the porch. Could you please indicate the process necessary? Can we clean and brighten to prep for 100 series stain? Would stripping be necessary? Why?
You would have to strip and start over. Upload some pics here in the comments for advice.
Here are the pictures.
You will need the additives for the stripper as you have an excess buildup of TWP on your wood. TWP is supposed to soak into the wood grain fully, not dry on top of the wood grain.
https://www.twpstain.com/wood-stain-strippers/rad-stripper-additives
So I should strip with the gel AND booster additives?
Both.
Are samples available?
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
how soon after applying the first coat do I apply the second coat
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Is this deck ok to stain? It’s a bit blotchy with mildew/algae/green stuff.
The algae is imbedded in your wood grain. Try bleach to kill it. 1 part to 4 parts water. Rinse well with water when done.
Ok do I need to re-strip or brighten? It is starting to look less blotchy as it dries out (I did it yesterday with a pressure washer) but not as clean as some other pics I’ve seen.
No need.
I have used the TWP 101 cedartone on my deck for the last 5 years now I am switching to the 1500 series which color in the 1500 series is closest to the old 101 color Thank You
1530 Natural is closest to the 101 Cedartone.
No, and if doing a second coat, it has to be applied within 20-60 minutes of the first coat. We would leave it as is.
I just put a coat of the Earth color of the semi transparent stain on. Do you think it needs a second coat?
I have a cedar fence that I have used TWP on previously. I don’t remember which one I used but want to preserve the natural color of the cedar. It has not grayed at all.
Post some pics in the comments for prep and color advice.
How long do I have to wait to apply this stain after I have used the restore a deck stripper and brighter?
48 hours.
I have a deck that has already had 1500 series deck stain on it. It needs to be recoated. Besides a gallon of deck stain what else do I need to re-stain it? Does it need brightener or stripper? If you can run me through the process, that would be very helpful. Thanks much!
Use this for prep when recoating.

I had been using TWP 100 series which you no longer ship to my state. Is the 1500 series as good as the 100 and if so why do you still offer the 100 series? Can you use 1500 over applied 100 series? Lastly are colors consistent in the 1500 series compared to the 100 series
Strip and brighten when switching series.
Colors are not exactly the same between series. Let us know which color you had for closest color in 1500 series.
The 1500 is just as good. Most states can still use the 100 still so need to discontinue it.
How many coats do you apply to an old deck? I asked about Cabot and was recommended to buy Armstrong but I’m also looking at TWP 1500. Which of these would you choose?
Use the TWP 1500. 2 coats applied wet on wet is correct.
I stained some new Pine board and batten siding a couple years ago after letting it age for 9 months over the winter. I used Rustic 1516. A year later and I feel like the color has become much more orange than originally when I stained it. I’d like to strip it and re do it with Pecan 1520. Will your stripper products allow that color change?. If so, what stripper cleaner do you recommend? Thank you.
Yes, you can do this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
What may or may not cause this is the removal of oxidation or old coatings. The deeper the oxidation removal or the need to heavy strip is the reason this may happen. No prep products would be immune to this from occurring.
See this article that explains it better: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/wood-fuzzies-furring-on-deck/
I have semi-solid SuperDeck oil based stain on my redwood siding. It is no longer available. (Seems that everything is migrating toward water-based acrylic, which apparently not recommended for re-staining redwood). Will TWP semi-transparent oil based be suitable to apply over my siding? Also, my siding has a pleasing flat dry appearance to it. Will TWP give it an oily/shiny look?
You cannot apply TWP (or any other brand) over your Super Deck unless you fully remove the Super Deck first. TWP is not shiny.
This summer I cleaned, stripped, and brightened our decks. Because we have some areas that receive full unrelenting sun and other areas that are perpetually in the shade, I decided to use TWP 1500 clear. After stripping the boards down to original wood they look great and the clear finish will hopefully allow the natural wood grain to show through. My question is more about maintenance. Next spring is there anything I should do to keep the decks looks great after all the work I did getting them ready for waterproofing?
Redo with the Gemini Restore Kit prep when recoating.
Recently sanded mahagony porch to get old varnish off. Rented a standup orbital sander from Home Depot but I still see some hints of yellow left over. I assume this is spots or streaks of varnish that didn’t come completely off. Is it ok to power wash then stain this as is? I cannot go back and rent a sander again and have hand sanded as much as I possibly could.
also, if I power wash and wait a week or two because of rain is that ok? Or does it need to be power washed 2 days before
Send some pics while the wood is wet. This would show if the yellow is old varnish or not.
My daughter has a small deck in Chicago made of pressure treated wood. The wood was coated with a solid Behr stain ( found a can) that has failed, probably due to an application before it had a chance to weather. I have had to use 36 grit sandpaper to remove the stain. I want to use TWP 1500. The 36 grit did not tear up and wood. What should be my next steps? Sand finer, deck wash, etc?
Thanks in advance
Pics?
Here’s a status picture. I am going to use a hand sander to remove the old stain on the edges, but it is all 36 grit based sanding. After I complete that work, what’s your recommendation on next steps?
Final prep with this kit:
https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
1 coat of TWP since you sanded.
Will this protect tongue and groove mahagony porch? Just sanded the old varnish off but now I’m thinking the varnish would hold up better to winter by preventing water getting between boards and expanding? It’s basically hardwood floors outside, about 90% covered so the parts in the sun/rain get beaten up
Varnish peels on outside wood and is never suggested. Use the TWP.

What is the danger if I do not wait to allow the kiln dried Batu to weather for the 6-12 months and just finish it now before adding it to the steel frame for outdoor use?
It is about porosity, not how dry the wood is. Lack of penetration for new wood that has not seasoned could lead to premature failure.
Ken Drisdell 6/22/23
Do you have to wait the recommended 4-6 weeks for weathering if you are using kiln dried wood? The plan is to prefinish Batu hardwood slats and apply them to a steel frame for outdoor use.
Yes, you should wait and prep.
Can i use this product on new pressure treated wood that was kiln dried, but also colored (Prowood Duracolor)
No. You have to weather new wood and you would have to remove the prior stain as well.

I plan to use the TWP 1500 series to stain Batu wood slats applied to a steel frame for an enclosure wall. Is one coat sufficient for this dense hardwood? I prefer the natural mahogany color of the wood yet we need UV protection to keep it from greying. Can you suggest the bests color to accomplish this?
One coat. Look at the Rustic color.
Hi. Ipe in Northern CA. Rainy in winter, sunny in summer, 80-90 deg. Wood is weathered to gray, 2 yr old, with no stain/coating. Assume clean/brighten, TWP 1500. Should I sand 40 grit, or will graying be removed in cleaning process. What should I expect for coverage, 250 sq foot? If applying with pad, do I need to back brush?
Just clean and brighten, no need to sand. 250 per gallon for IPE. Just one coat.
I am replacing all of my 35 year old redwood decking, but leaving the railing that is still serviceable. My plan is to cut then stain all boards so there is TWP coverage over the whole board. Then in 6 months or so I would strip and brighten all wood (railings and decking), hoping that the upper decking faces will have cured and after stripping be ready to swallow the new stain. Is that feasible?
No. New wood needs to be installed, weathered, and prepped before staining: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
There is no point or advantage to staining all sides of the wood. Only stain the exposed wood after the steps are followed.
OK, thank you. If I put the decking down and leave it to weather, can I use the stripper I need on the railings to act as the cleaner, followed with a brightener? Or do I specifically need to use cleaner, not stripper?
We would suggest the Cleaner over the Stripper for the new wood.
We have a 450 sqf redwood deck built 6 years ago that has been stained annually with penofin clear. Now we added another 250 sqf redwood deck 1 month ago. We want to switch to TWP 1500 (for Colorado). How do we prepare our old deck for the new stain? How long should we wait to stain the new addition? Do you recommend to use 1500 clear or 1502 redwood? Should we use the same stain for old and new deck? We live at 5300′ altitude.
Strip and brighten for the older wood using this: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
You will need to clean and brighten the new wood but read this first:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Any color that you like will work. Clear will not provide UV protection from graying, has to be tinted. Might want to test some samples:
https://www.twpstain.com/stain-samples
Do I need to power wash after sanding or can i just apply stain then? Sanding to remove old varnish
Best to clean and brighen after sanding to help open up the wood grain. Do not sand finer than 80 grit.
Hi, very happy with 1500 product used on deck railings (see picture). Although prep was very time consuming. Had to remove peeling urethane so many hours striping sanding and whitening. Result is worth it.
Buttttt, now I have to restain sun and weather beaten house. 8 years since built and looks like only one coat of something applied. 1. Should I use 1500 or the new 200 product on rough cut, sun worn pine(see picture)? 2. Same question for cedar. Some sun protected (see picture). 3. Now the dreadful prep. The hose is tall and I can’t imagine how long it would take to tape windows, strip, whiten everything. Is there any option, I can’t sand the rough cut pine. Can I powere wash and apply stain?
Use the TWP 1500 for all wood. As for prep, it needs to be stripped and brightened to remove the old coatings. You cannot apply TWP (or any other brand) of a different brand of semi-transparent stain. To be safe, we would highly suggest getting a Boom Lift while working. It would make it so much easier as well.
We have just recently remodeled our deck with new standard pressure treated lumber. About 30 days ago we treated the wood with Thompson’s WaterSeal Clear Wood Sealer Clear Oil-Based Wood Sealant. We wanted the natural look but now realizing that this is not a good option for UV protection. We are going to purchase this product and would like to know when I apply your product can I put it directly over the sealer already on there or do I need to sand it down first or is there a product you recommend to strip it. Thanks!
You will need to remove it. Strip and Brighten.

I have a Yellow Cedar deck. Built Fall 2021. July 2022 I stained the deck following all instructions of Olympic Summit, Stain + Sealant, Woodland Oil, Transparent, Natural, product code 801102C. After one winter, every part of the deck that was snow covered if peeling off. After I strip and sand the deck to remove all of this stain that didn’t last 12 months, should I leave it unprotected, or is there a product that would last 2+ years. We live in Fernie, BC, Canada where we get significant snow and a few thaw-freeze cycles per winter. Thanks for any suggestions of what I should use (if anything) after starting over
Use this for Canada. It will last 2-3 years and will not peel.

I have a brand new fir decking on my covered front porch. Want to keep the color and look of the wood. Should I use 1500 or 1530 or a different one. Don’t really wanna stain it. Just seal it but with some Uv protection if possible Thanks
See here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
If you want UV protection then you must use a tinted stain color. 1515 Honeytone is the lightest tint.
would there be any application or drying issues with using 1515 Honeytone for a first coat. And then 1500 Clear for the second coat of wet on wet. would like some UV protection, but not all the color
No, do not do this. Use the same color for both coats.
thank you
I bought 3 samples to select the stain for my one year old deck. Natural 1530 was light and highlighted the knots and grain enough to keep it natural looking, yet UV protected. I went with it. Samples will help you make a good decision.
Is your Black Walnut the same as Dark Walnut? My builder listed TWP Dark Walnut Gel Stain on our spec sheet. Need to re-stain deck and wood on house from original TWP stain in 2018 but cannot find “dark walnut” on your site. Thx!
There is no such thing as TWP Dark Walnut Gel stain. Never has been.
I want to stain my Ipe deck in Upstate New York. What product and color should I use?
Most use the Rustic 1516 color. Just one coat.
Should I apply a different UV sealant over TWP for a deck that get full sun?
No. You cannot apply a sealer over a deck stain.
I have a 20+ year old PT deck located in southern Ohio that I have used TWP 1530 on for the past 10+ years. I need to recoat it (2 years since it has been stained) and I intend to use the Gemeni Cleander and Brightener before recoating and will be recoating with TWP 1530. My question is when do you consider sanding necessary? My deck boards have been sanded several times in the past and currently show no signs of splintering.
No need to sand.
I have a covered porch that is smooth wood. It is previously covered with varnish and looks like indoor floors would except on the stairs that are now peeling. I used twp on my back deck and want to do it on the porch too. Am I able to do that if it’s super smooth wood that’s more like a floor than a deck? There is no space between boards. I was going to sand the varnish off but would the wood be too smooth to accept the stain?
Sand with 60-80 grit paper to remove the varnish and then final prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. One coat of the TWP only.
I have a new 3 level deck that has weathered for 12 months now. It has grayed so we will use Gemini Restore Kit to clean and prep. House is Taupe in color and deck railings are white. Coastal location with lots of sun on 2 upper decks most of day. Which series do you recommend I use?
Were are you located?
Coastal Delaware
Use the 1500 Series: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-1500-series
Can the TWP 1500 clear deck stain be customized with a tinted color? If so which tint is best to mix into the clear deck stain?
No, that is not possible.
You can mix any color 1500 series with the 1500 clear. I mixed the 1503 with the 1500 using 3 gallons of 1503 with 1 gallon of 1500. Installed the mix on western red cedar fence in 2018 and it is still one of the best looking fences in my neighborhood. You cannot mix 1500 series with 100 or 200 series product. Side note: Using clear will lighten the color you use but the clear has no real UV protection that is in the tint. TWP does not customize colors. Find your ratio by mixing small amounts, 3 tbs to 1 tbs and apply to same wood as on deck or fence before apply to installed deck or fence. My fence is 7 yrs old and lost some color so my ratio on touch up will be maybe 2/2. PS The fence has seen 5 or 6 state hurricanes and I live near the Gulf of Mexico.
I need to reseal my pergola made from Doug fir and western red cedar. I sealed it in 2016 with 1500 in dark walnut. What is the proper prep for this? I plan on pressure washing. Anything else?
Use this for prep while pressure washing.
