We just finished staining our above-ground deck with TWP 1500 Pecan, and it looks fabulous! We are now installing bamboo-reed fencing below the deck (as opposed to lattice) for a tropical feel and would like to match the color with the deck. Is TWP 1500 our best option for bamboo? Thanks!

Is the 1500 Cedartone similar to 100 Pecan? If we want to go darker than the 100 Pecan but in the 1500 series, what color would you recommend?
120 Pecan is similar to 1520 Pecan. Darker brown would be the 1503 Dark Oak.
What 1500 series stain would be a similar color as the 200 series Butternut Brown? Or, would it be ok to use the 200 Series on the timbers of a front porch and deco truss?
There is no matching or similar color in the 1500 Series to the 207 Butternut. You can use the 200 Series on front porch timbers and trusses.

I build and stain Adirondack chairs, but I am dissatisfied with the oily surface that Ready Seal provides. Is this characteristic typical of oil-based stains, or does your product cure differently? Additionally, can it be applied in colder temperatures, and what is the drying time?
Ready Seal contains nondrying oil (paraffin), so it will rub off and have an oily residue since it “never” dries and cures. TWP stains are fully drying and curing oils, so once fully dry and cured, they will not rub off like Ready Seal

Use a tinted color in the 1500 Series stain. First, remove all prior coatings or stains.
I have ~200sqft of brand new white cedar shakes and was thinking of dipping them before install. Live in New England. Looking for a clear finish. Best product to consider? Was thinking about 1500. Anything special to consider?

My deck is 8 years old. i have power washed and sanded down to bare wood. Am thinking the 1500 series? Live on a lake in southeastern Nebraska. Is this the correct product ?
You could use the 100 or 1500 Series for NE. Both are allowed there, and both last the same.
The deck has wooden posts and cap rails but uses stainless steel wire railings. Do I need to mask the wires prior to staining the posts?
Just avoid getting any of the TWP stain on the wire railings when applying.

Hello! I have a two year old deck which we cleaned and treated for the first time last September with the 1500 series Pecan. I remember reading last year that I can add another coat this september without cleaning first?
Also, the deck gets a lot of sun and the much of the first coat seems to be gone. Would you suggest a darker shade for more protection? Also, to extend the life of the deck do you suggest sticking with a semi transparent for longer or moving to a semi solid?

No, you must prep whenever you recoat, which would consist of cleaning. If you switch colors or semi-solids, you must strip and brighten for prep. The semi-solid colors give longer UV protection.

Given the sun exposure, Is there a downside to moving to a semisolid color so early in the lifespan of the deck, or do you suggest sticking with the semi transparent for a few more seasons first?
Semi-solid colors will give longer UV protection. If you switch, you will need to strip and brighten, which is very easy to do.
Hi there – we are applying this stain to our deck and noticing that where we had a table or bbq (so the old stain isn’t completely gone) the new stain isn’t absorbing and is hard to wipe off the excess. It still looks very wet even after a few days. Any ideas on what to do?

TWP stains are penetrating, not filming stains. Make sure you remove any prior coatings first.

Yes, it is clear but clear sealers will not provide UV protection from graying. It will gray naturally unless you use a tinted color of TWP.

For two coats applied wet on wet, you will average about 100-150 sq feet per gallon for the 2 coats. About 7-10 gallons for 950 sq. feet.

Can I put black walnut over this fence after I strip with both rad additives and brighten? I know it depends on the prep. Having a hard time deciding between solid rad and a semisolid twp1500. Say the prep isn’t exactly perfect what’s the con of applying twp 1500 black walnut anyways. Just feel like it’s almost impossible/unrealistic to expect the prep to get EVERY spot cleaned. Hmmm. The old coating has to come off fully to use the TWP 1500 Series or any semi-transparent stain.
People have actually removed the entire old coating (water based behr semi) with the rad stripper both additives using a pressure washer? If there’s no hope in me doing this I’ll just throw the towel in and get a solid. Would be kinda cool to see some wood grains with a dark semi though. Almost think a crappy semi application might look better than a painted no wood grain solid. Probably should just do the steps on a section and throw some samples on it after. Prob is there’s different spots where the sun hasn’t worn off the old coat as much as other areas so who knows how that area will look vs the sample area. Really appreciate your patience and advice.

Some of the old stain is still sticking in areas should I respray the stripper with both additives in the stubborn areas? Can I respot strip until the stubborn areas are removed ? that is if there is any, assuming there will be. Also can I apply the 1500 with a Chapin clean and seal poly gallon hand pump sprayer? Obviously I’ll brush after.

Cape Cod Gray is a semi-solid so your best option is to use the TWP Low-VOC in a gray semi-solid color:

I have the 200 color 207 butternut brown on my deck and want to switch to the 1500 series. Which color is the closest to what I have now. It’s hard to tell by the swatches
Dark Oak but it is darker than Butternut. Make sure to strip and brighten for prep.
I have waited the appropriate amount of time for my new deck to be stained. I did the prep work with the Restore a deck cleaner and brightener. I couldn’t finish the entire deck (it’s quite large). Now I am waiting for the weather to give me a window between 48 after a rain and 48 hours before rain and above 50 degrees to finish the rest. Is there any wiggle room in these parameters? I live in upstate NY and I think I am running out of time and panicking that it will have to remain 3/4 finished and the other 1/4 will end up turning gray. Any tips or suggestions?
It must be 48 hours after prep or rain to stain. It can rain after applying about 12 hours later but that varies based on the temps.
What temperature is needed for 12 hours after application?

The TWP 1500 Series is a penetrating stain. It does not have a shine.
Do you have a recommendation for TWP 1500 stain for a mahogany deck?
Most use the Rustic color.
Does 1500 have linseed oil in it? I’m debating between 1500 and 200 on my log cabin and was told 200 has no linseed oil.
1500 is a blend of natural and synthetic oils. A very small amount of linseed. TWP 200 is paraffin-based.

The 200 is used more for shakes and shingles while the 1500 is used more for log cabins.
I have some hatchway doors being built to replace our old ones that are rotting. The new ones will be tongue and groove pine. My biggest fear is warping. Would it be ok to seal them with 1500 series before they get mounted? They are being assembled off-site.

You apply with a pump sprayer and then pressure wash off. You can save the prep products while in powder form for may years.

We clean and brighten our porch every year to prep for staining with TWP 100 series. This year, due to availability, we stained our porch with the 1500 series. We have been completely disappointed in the 1500 series and want to return back to the 100 series on the porch. Could you please indicate the process necessary? Can we clean and brighten to prep for 100 series stain? Would stripping be necessary? Why?

You will need the additives for the stripper as you have an excess buildup of TWP on your wood. TWP is supposed to soak into the wood grain fully, not dry on top of the wood grain.

Is this deck ok to stain? It’s a bit blotchy with mildew/algae/green stuff.
The algae is imbedded in your wood grain. Try bleach to kill it. 1 part to 4 parts water. Rinse well with water when done.
Ok do I need to re-strip or brighten? It is starting to look less blotchy as it dries out (I did it yesterday with a pressure washer) but not as clean as some other pics I’ve seen.

I have a similar issue. After cleaning with the Gemini Restore-A-Deck kit there have been periodic rain and hard to find 48 hours of dry time. If we do the 1 part bleach 4 parts water method and then rinse, can we apply the stain right afterwards? Or need to wait another 48 hours? Also if the green algae is very light, can we simply stain over without killing it first?
You must wait 48 hours after rain or prep before staining. You can stain over the green.

No, and if doing a second coat, it has to be applied within 20-60 minutes of the first coat. We would leave it as is.

I had been using TWP 100 series which you no longer ship to my state. Is the 1500 series as good as the 100 and if so why do you still offer the 100 series? Can you use 1500 over applied 100 series? Lastly are colors consistent in the 1500 series compared to the 100 series

Colors are not exactly the same between series. Let us know which color you had for closest color in 1500 series.
The 1500 is just as good. Most states can still use the 100 still so need to discontinue it.

I stained some new Pine board and batten siding a couple years ago after letting it age for 9 months over the winter. I used Rustic 1516. A year later and I feel like the color has become much more orange than originally when I stained it. I’d like to strip it and re do it with Pecan 1520. What may or may not cause this is the removal of oxidation or old coatings. The deeper the oxidation removal or the need to heavy strip is the reason this may happen. No prep products would be immune to this from occurring.

I have semi-solid SuperDeck oil based stain on my redwood siding. It is no longer available. (Seems that everything is migrating toward water-based acrylic, which apparently not recommended for re-staining redwood). Will TWP semi-transparent oil based be suitable to apply over my siding? Also, my siding has a pleasing flat dry appearance to it. Will TWP give it an oily/shiny look?
You cannot apply TWP (or any other brand) over your Super Deck unless you fully remove the Super Deck first. TWP is not shiny.
This summer I cleaned, stripped, and brightened our decks. Because we have some areas that receive full unrelenting sun and other areas that are perpetually in the shade, I decided to use TWP 1500 clear. After stripping the boards down to original wood they look great and the clear finish will hopefully allow the natural wood grain to show through. My question is more about maintenance. Next spring is there anything I should do to keep the decks looks great after all the work I did getting them ready for waterproofing?

Recently sanded mahagony porch to get old varnish off. Rented a standup orbital sander from Home Depot but I still see some hints of yellow left over. I assume this is spots or streaks of varnish that didn’t come completely off. Is it ok to power wash then stain this as is? I cannot go back and rent a sander again and have hand sanded as much as I possibly could.
also, if I power wash and wait a week or two because of rain is that ok? Or does it need to be power washed 2 days before
Send some pics while the wood is wet. This would show if the yellow is old varnish or not.
My daughter has a small deck in Chicago made of pressure treated wood. The wood was coated with a solid Behr stain ( found a can) that has failed, probably due to an application before it had a chance to weather. I have had to use 36 grit sandpaper to remove the stain. I want to use TWP 1500. The 36 grit did not tear up and wood. What should be my next steps? Sand finer, deck wash,etc?

Will this protect tongue and groove mahagony porch? Just sanded the old varnish off but now I’m thinking the varnish would hold up better to winter by preventing water getting between boards and expanding? It’s basically hardwood floors outside, about 90% covered so the parts in the sun/rain get beaten up
Varnish peels on outside wood and is never suggested. Use the TWP.

What is the danger if I do not wait to allow the kiln dried Batu to weather for the 6-12 months and just finish it now before adding it to the steel frame for outdoor use?
It is about porosity, not how dry the wood is. Lack of penetration for new wood that has not seasoned could lead to premature failure.
