We have used this product twice on our pressure-treated wood deck (. It applies easily and looks terrific when done. We are DIYers with limited experience with this sort of project, and had no trouble following the application directions. We had to address a lot of wood damage before applying it--severe UV damage, mold and mildew--but with the right prep, we couldn't be happier with the outcome. The second time we used it, we did over-apply a bit and had a lot of shiny excess stain after a few hours of drying. We read the tips here on the website and the next day we wiped off the excess using a light misting of mineral spirits and shop rags. Easy fix and it looks great. Never any peeling, which is just what we wanted, and it made our heavily damaged wood look better than we thought possible. I love finding a product that works as well as advertised.

Natural has a decent amount of tint. TWP will wear eventually. This varies on the amount of traffic. It could be 1.5-3 years. The key is to re coat before the stain goes to full failure.

Hi, I\'m curious if 1500 Series deck stains would start to develop wear patterns in the deck color from foot traffic? We\'d like to go with Cedartone on our 5/4 pressure treated deck, but if wear patterns are a problem we may go with Natural since it looks to be closer to the color of the wood itself as a lighter stain.
    Thanks!

    1. Use the Gemini-Restore-A-Deck Kit to clean and brighten the deck.
    2. One kit should be enough for a 30x12 deck.
    3. Minimum temperature should be 45 degrees.
    4. Typically needs to be redone every 2-3 years.
    5. If the stain is gone then nothing else is needed.

I have an old pressure treated lumber deck about 30ft x 12 ft with wood rails and stairs. It is all greyed out. the deck is on the west side of the house and gets sun from noon to sunset.

    1. What do I need to do to prep it for staining? Most of the deck has not seen any stain for over 5 years (how long I own the home- do not know if it was ever done)
    2. How much of each item will I need?
    3. The temp is hovering between 40-60 deg. on Long Island, should I wait till the spring or can I still stain it before the leaves fall?
    4. How often will I need to restain it?

    5. I had put Duckback semi transparent on the stairs but most of the lumber has greyed out after 1.5 yrs. We rebuilt the stairs 2 years ago. Anything I need to do special to prep this section.

    thank you.

Hey there - broke college student - built a 14 * 16 deck out of Doug fir. I know it\'s not a good choice, but it\'s cheap and needs to last four years. Question is we want to put a good stain on it to make it last, candy paint on a pinto! Will the 1500 product work well on Doug fir in northern sf Cali? Thanks-

Natural is the second lightest color. Honeytone is the lightest. One gallon cover about 150-200 feet for the one coat. Second coat would spread twice as far.

New deck, 3 months old. Is the 1530 the closest to pine? Does one gallon cover 150-200 sq ft single coat or the 2x wet coat? Thanks.

TWP suggests that you let new wood weather for 4-12 months before applying the stain.

Hello - I just finished my deck and pergola today (9/3/12). I live in western Wisconsin and are wary of leaving it unprotected over the winter. Is it absolutely necessary to wait two months? I put a lot time and effort and just want to protect my work. Thanks!

You cannot use an interior stain then top coat with a clear coat. You will ruin your deck.

You should clean and brighten the wood to prep. You can apply the 1500 over the 500.

I used the 500 product on my railing last year. I\'m planning on reapplying some of the 1500 product (assuming I can find it local...near San Francisco) this year. For prepping do I just need to clean the railing with water (and soap??) or something else?

Wet on wet means you coat the entire deck then reapply the second coat right away while the first coat is still wet. New wood only needs 1 coat and you should let the wood dry for a few months or longer then clean and brighten to prep. We like stain pads for application.

What\'s wet on wet ? Do I let the first coat dry completely (2 days ?) before I apply the second ? I have a new deck, and TWP 1500 looks like the best. What\'s the best application method, brush ?

Nothing lasts more then a year on IPE. It is the wood not the stain. Any of the colors would work on IPE.

I used Cabot\'s timber oil for three times on my ipe deck. It doesn\'t last long enough and scales. I have knocked it off again with power sprayer and would like to use TWP product in a dark brown (Pecan?). My lumber yard can order it...which one specifically for ipe and what is the square foot coverage on this type of wood? Any other advice?

More of a cedar color with a some brown added.
