TWP 1500 5 Gallon Stain
TWP 1500 is a Semi-transparent Oil-Based wood stain and preservative that is allowed in all 50 states.
The new TWP® 1500 formula is designed to penetrate better, dry faster and outperform the previous TWP® 500 series formula.
TWP® 1500 Series is an EPA registered wood preservative which prevents structural damage and wood decay on exterior above ground wood surfaces such as fencing, decking, wood siding, log homes, and roofing. TWP® 1500 Series resists water absorption that causes warping, cracking and splitting as well as preventing freeze damage in colder climates.
TWP® 1500 Series is a low VOC preservative with special U.V. absorbing pigments that prevent unsightly wood graying, darkening and fading. The selected mildewcides inhibit the growth of mold and mildew which assist in preventing premature discoloration.

Can I use a roller to apply TWP on my covered porch?
Rollers can splatter. Best to use brushes and stain pads: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
It seems I’ve read that RAD brightener is effective in cleaning cement stain. Can I assume step 1 cleaner is okay, or she I just use brightener? How toxic is it to leafy plants?
Not sure what you mean about concrete stains. Do you have a pic? You would use the Cleaner not the Brightener to clean.
Thanks.
I have stained my deck with TWP 1500 for years, really love the stuff. Is it necessary to always strip and brighten? Can a good scrub and a power sprayer work just as well? My last application was 3 years ago.
You can clean and brighten with this: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Pressure washing alone does not do as good of a job.
TWP, I agree and have seen the difference in pressure washing alone compared to the RAD kit. The difference in the cleanness and brightness of the two is crazy. The challenge I’m having is that this week I took a couple of days to prep for stain and got the deck to look light, bright as if it couldn’t be more ready for stain.
Since the prep I’ve waited 48 hours to stain but …. It has not rained but I live on the west coast and every morning I wake to a deck that’s covered with the overnight marine layer. I have no idea when I’ll find a reasonable time, not to mention optimal, to stain.
TWP, can you guys please advise?
If it is just dew, let it burn off and stain in the afternoon.
Thanks. I know it seems like common sense because it is definitely not rain. However, it is very wet, not dewy damp. I’ll proceed.
Do you have a moisture meter? Less than 15% is what you would need.
Getting ready to put the stain on this lovely Memorial Day weekend.
The Mrs and I — but this is the first time either of us have done this.
Any videos you can point to show how it’s done? How long to wait to reapplying for the wet on wet? When it looks like it’s beginning to dry out?
We bought the Padco Deck and Stain Pads so we are ready with that.
Do you dunk in the bucket, or put it into a paint tray (I assume paint tray as it’s easier).
Any other words of wisdom (I did read the FAQ).
We’ll have before and after PIX for the contest!
We do not have any videos but we have a whole website with tips:

Please excuse just a couple more questions. Before applying RAD brightener which wood condition is preferable wet, damp or dry? Also, when applying the 1500 natural stain is it acceptable to spray stain on from the bottle used to apply the brightener if rinsed or is it best to dip a pad in a stain tray?
Thanks for your patience
Damp wood for brightener. You can use a pump sprayer with the stain but you should back wipe to ensure an even application.
Thank you
I have 5 gallons of 1530 natural stain remaining from work about three to four year ago. I’ve cleaned and will put RAD brightener on this morning. I have 700′ of 6 year old redwood and 200′ of, at least 20 y.o. fir that was there when we bought the house. Two questions: 1) I’m selling the house and would prefer to not buy more stain but don’t want to shaft a new buyer. What are the ramifications of only putting on one coat of stain now; and 2) I’d like to stain soon after putting the brightener on but for some reason I’m thinking that the 1530 could not be applied wet on wet. Am I right about that?
Thanks. I appreciate whatever insight you can give me.
1. It will fade faster.
2. TWP has to be applied to dry wood. Wet on wet does not mean you can apply to damp wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/
Thank you. If I’m able to brighten this morning and assuming no rain in the next three days, is it realistic to begin staining in 24 hours?
Need 48 hours after rain or prep to let the wood dry out.
Thank you
After finishing the staining process (Dark Oak), how long before it dries to the point it won’t transfer to things put onto it (I’m thinking Rugs, Big Pillows, Dog Paws, etc)? Should I powerwash (or just spray it down) before I do that to wash off any residual stain?
TWP is a fully curing stain so it does not rub off. Full cure can take a few days depending on weather conditions.
Before and after
What color stain did you use?
This may be a dumb question..I am looking to seal the skirt of my deck as the boards and railings are trex. Do I need to do both front and back of boards? The skirt encloses the bottom of the deck so you can’t see inside.
Just the exposed side.
Should you power wash a deck that hasn’t been treated in 5 years? What steps should be taken start to finish? Thanks in advance
Has it been stained prior? Post some pics in the comments for prep help.
Yes it has but not a TWP product

What is protocol for staining brand new cedar fence?
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
Have a new installed pressure treated pine deck( not the green looking it looks close to natural. The coverage on your “need help” states coverage for the 1500 series @ 150-250 sq.ft. Per gallon. Is that for one coat or 2. Also, is the 2 coats stated for both all horizontal and vertical, or just the horizontal surfaces. I am referencing the semi-transparent stain. Thank you.
One coat. Both.
We have a large deck that is also goes half way around an above ground pool. We’ve used Defy in the past but it doesn’t seem to hold up as the entire deck is in full sun..what is recommended to re-stain with? I’m searching for a product that will hold up longer than 1 year. I used semi transparent, but am thinking more solid of color? Any suggestions would be appreciated! We live in Wisconsin so winter weather is also a consideration
Remove the Defy with this kit: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
Stain with the TWP Semi-Solid colors for best UV resistance: https://www.twpstain.com/twp-semi-solid-pro-series
We have tried many products on our cedar fence and deck. TWP stains are by far the best product without doubt. Wood will require maintenance but TWP outperforms the competition. We won’t use anything else ever.
What moisture level is required for white cedar fence? My meter reads 15 and it was installed a week ago. When the moisture is right can I just dust off the fence and start staining? Thanks!
Hello,
It has nothing to do with moisture % but porosity. New wood needs to weather and be prepped. See here for more info:
https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
2021 I used the restore-a-deck stripper and brightener prior to applying the twp1530 stain. (See pictures) I was very happy with results by the results of both the prep and the stain. I may have had to high of expectation though when it came to longevity. I was expecting that the deck would last at least 2 years before having to redo the deck. I live in California. The reason for my contact here is to try to understand if the expectations were out of line or maybe the application last year was faulty. I understand it’s difficult given you didn’t see the work last year or how the deck appears today. But would appreciate any comments.
It looks “dirty” which could be from trees or just the surrounding area. The stain is intact and still working.
How long does the 1500 series keep for? I have a gallon of dark walnut that’s 5+ years old unopened.
2-2 years is the shelf life.
I stained our new fence 4 yrs ago with the 1530 and want to reapply this spring. What would be the best method of reapplying the same 150 stain? Do I need to strip the old stain?

restaining
Can you spray twp 1500 honeytone with an airless sprayer (e.g. on lattice).
Yes.
hi again, I see there is a clear #1500 available. does not have UV protection. is UV protection totally necessary in a heavily wooded location. this staircase does get a minor amount of direct sunlight, briefly, but most of the time the sunlight is filtered through tree leaves & branches. Jeffrey
Clear does not have UV protection. Yes, you need tint to prevent graying.
1530 natural on a 4′ wide X 16 treads high exterior staircase w/ 36sq.ft. landing done with Red Batu & Meranti? don’t want to add color, want the natural beauty of the different colors of mahogany to show. need to protect in this dense tree location.
You must have tint/color for UV protection. Trees will not stop UV graying.
I did the gemini prep clean/brighten to get ready for adding a maintenance coat of 1504 black walnut. The sun fading is still pretty irregular and noticeable. I was afraid to get any closer with the powerwasher. The wood seems porous though and ready to accept the stain. Should I go forward wet on wet with the 1504 after 48 hours?
No, you need to redo the prep as it will not stain evenly like this. Either get closer with the pressure washer while using Gemini Kit or use the RAD Stripper.
Is it necessary to apply a sealer on top of the stain?
No, and you cannot apply a sealer over a deck stain. It would peel if you did.
Do you mix/shake the stains prior to shipping or should I take it to the hardware store to shake up?
You will need to mix it when you receive it as the pigment does settle. Use a 5-gallon drill mixer that attaches to any drill.
Do you recommend any particular kind of paint sprayer for application? Or is brush better?
You can spray but brushes and stain pads are better: https://www.twpstain.com/wood-and-deck-stains/application-tools/brushes-stain-pads
how does temperature dropping to 40 degrees overnight effect the product
Cannot drop below 40 the first night after staining.
What is the recommended shortest amount of dry time before rain comes. Having a tough time scheduling application the rain is forecasted soon after the 48 hr dry out time from last rain. And it’s only getting colder
12 hours.
Thank you so much for the responses. My last hurdle is that I waited over 48 hours after rain and I can still still physically see and feel some damp areas. Should I still wait? Using the 1500
Yes, you cannot apply it to damp wood.
1 or 2 coats on a deck that had paint removed by a dimabrush then quickly sanded (one quick pass) with 60 grit ?
Probably two but hard to say as it depends on how porous the wood is.
We stripped and brightened our 3 uear old deck on Sunday and planned to stain today (Wed) to allow the 48 hours dry time, however woke up this morning to (unforecasted) light rain. Assuming it stoos this morning, will we be okay to stain tomorrow (Thursday) or do we need 48 hours to dry again? We have a planned trip out of town Friday – Sunday and then rain in the forecast Monday. We can cancel our trip if necessary but prefer not to. As always, thank you! for your prompt reply!
48 hours of drying after rain or prep. You will push it by staining it 24 hours later.
Love the product. Been using it for years. Wondering why this year the application came out a bit blotchy? (dark spots in areas). Used the same method, cleaner + brightener, pressure washed, then stained. Any suggestions for the next time?
Looks like the prep was uneven. Do you have an after prep pic?
What’s the difference between the original and 1500 series. I’ve used TWP for 20+ years but not the newer series. My neighbors can’t believe my fence looks so great after almost 30 years since I put up and I want to keep it looking that way.
The difference is VOC content. The 100 Series cannot be used in all states.
We have a 1 year old cedar fence rough sawn and plan to use 1500 Rustic or Dark Oak, clean and brighten. We have a double sided friendly neighbor fence, the same on both sides. See attached pic.
Can we do a single coat on all horizontals and verticles? Or do we need to do 2 coats wet on wet? What is the pros and cons of single vs 2 coats on our specific fence design? If 1 cost is possible then which color would look best?
