These calculations will help you determine the square footage for the proper amount of stain and prepping supplies needed to refinish your deck or fence using TWP 100 or TWP 1500 Series.

This is intended to provide you with an approximate estimate only. Material requirements may vary according to application method, surface condition, and weather conditions.

Prepping Options

  • Gemini Restore Kit. This will be used for new, gray, dirty decks and for applying TWP over an intact older coating of TWP.
  • Restore-A-Deck Stripper and Restore-A-Deck Brightener. This is used for removing old coatings of stain. Use this if you are switching from a different brand to TWP or if you have a neglected coating of TWP that has failed unevenly.

Deck Sq. Footage

Flooring Length x width =?

Railing Length x height =?

Steps Width x Depth x #of Steps =?

Add up all 3 for the Total Sq. footage.

Fence Sq. Footage

Length x height =?

Multiply x 2 for both sides = Total Sq. Footage

I'm staining a new pressure treated pine deck in San Antonio, TX. It will have a roof over it. 598 sq ft according to your site's calculator. The calculator says estimates for "refinishing." Do new decks require more or less stain than older decks.

    Gary Nabors:
I'm staining a new cedar fence for a customer. The customer has researched and selected your product. The fence was built approx. 4 months ago. There is no noticable graying, but we will still start with the Restore-A-Deck, as directed for new wood. There is staining below the nail heads (not rust stains, the nails are plated, I assume is is from the vinyl coating on the nails). Will the Restore-A-Deck take care of this, or will I need to try bleaching this stain out?

    Thank you,
    Gary

Hard to say. If it is black, then it is rust and the brightener will help to remove.

I live in Ontario Canada and am considering using a high quality oil deck stain and waterproofer. Can KWP be purchased here? Can I buy it in a store or does it have to be ordered?

TWP is not legal to be used or sold in Canada.

I have a 400 sqft deck no stairs and the railing has metal balusters so no need to stain them.

The deck was installed at the beginning of April and i want to stain it before the winter is here

This is on the second floor and I want to stain both the upper and lower part of the deck as well as the posts.

Can you let me know which products and quantities should i buy for this job?

    thks

    Luis

If you are doing upper and lowers you will need to double the sq. footage and then add on extra for the framing and posts. Total sq. footage could be in the 900-1000 sq. foot range. Prep first with the Gemini Restore Kit and you will need about 6-7 gallons for the one coat. Use the TWP 100 or 1500 Series depending on what your state allows.

    Big Phil:
If applying wet on wet, is it possible to determine if over applying? How would one go about applying 2/3 and 1/3 if using a pad application?

You want all the stain to soak into the wood grain. Over applying will result in a shiny and stick finish. You apply as much as the wood allows. The first coat on older wood should soak right into the wood grain and most likely will be a little uneven in appearance. The second/final coat will spread twice as far as the first coat and will give a nice rich and even appearance.

I have a deck that is around 700sq ft. It was built about 1 year ago. What should I use to clean it and how much should I buy? Do I need to put on more than 1 coat of 1500 stain? How much 1500 is needed for the square footage. Also I haven't read anything about a sealant. Is sealant needed in addition to applying the 1500?

The TWP is a sealer and a stain. You will need to prep with the Gemini Restore Kit. Just one is needed. For 700 sq. feet you will need about 6-7 gallon for two coats applied wet on wet.

I have a 16 x 32 older pressure treated deck that I have sanded first with 35 grit and then with 60 grit to completely remove a peeling solid white coating. I am now down to bear wood. This deck is in full sun most of the day/ I am located in central connecticut. I would like a semi transparent stain. WHat would you suggest and how long should I expect it to last.
    1 year? 2 years?

Use the TWP 1500 Series. Last about 2 years for most scenarios.

    Jack McDonald:
Please explain what "2 coats wet on wet" refers to in regards to estimating the stain application.

See this about how to apply wet on wet application:

    http://www.twpstainhelp.com/twp-stain-wet-on-wet-application/

The calculator takes in account that you are applying two coats with the wet on wet application method that is needed. New wood only needs one coat, so you would use about 2/3 the amount that the calculator states.

    Juliann Klafehn:
    2 Questions for you...
I have a steel roof with wood perlins and beams that also need to be stained. How should I account for those when buying the stain and prepping supplies?
I want to stain the horizontal surface dark and the vertical surfaces white. What do you suggest I use for the white columns?
Thanks so much for your advice!!

You would want a solid color deck stain for the vertical white columns. TWP does not come in a solid stain so it will have to be a different brand. For the TWP (horizontals), use the calculator for amount needed. Maybe Dark Oak color since you want it to be dark.
