I have a large redwood deck in Houston, TX. Some of the wood is several years old but I replaced a lot of it 4-5 months ago due to rotting. It is now the same color having greyed from the original red. I want to stain it so it will not rot. It has never had any stain applied. What is the best to use?

The wood has already turned a grey. Should I use the redwood color or the great color?

Any color you like will work after the prep. The prep will remove the graying.

No, it is not allowed in MI due to changes in VOC laws in MI. The 1500 Series performs the same.

I have a 1900 Fir Deck and Red Gradis Trims and just installed IPE for steps to the deck. I need to match it. What do you recommend? Is this product available in Rhode Island

TWP Stains

Reply to  Jeff

No, the 100 Series is not allowed in RI. You can use the 1500 Series there.

It is not possible to match Fir wood to IPE wood. Due to the density, no knots, and natural color of the wood, IPE will stain much differently. You may get it “close” but it will not match. Try Rustic 1516 color in the 1500 Series.

I have a 3 year old cedar deck. I live in northern Wisconsin, and the deck is exposed to lots of sun, snow, and rain, and is not covered or protected from the elements. It was previously stained/sealed with Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil. I was not pleased with how it wore off so quickly, and now have sanded it completely off down to bare wood. I have been quite overwhelmed searching all of the different deck stain/sealer options and can’t seem to find a consistent brand recommendation. I’ve heard good things about TWP deck stain. I want a product where my deck is going to look good every year, and the use of the product is relatively low-maintenance. I don’t want to have to sand/strip the deck every time it needs a refresh, but would rather wash/clean the deck before reapplying the product. If it happens to need a maintenance coat every year that’s fine, but I just don’t want it to consume a lot of time & energy!

What TWP product would be the best recommendation given my climate, and that’s easy to maintain (no sanding/stripping!) when it’s time for a refresh?

I’m installing new TNG pine (in pristine condition) on the ceiling of an interior showering area. I don’t expect the ceiling to experience much direct contact with water, but figured TWP couldn’t hurt. Would TWP 100 be an acceptable choice for this interior application?

Sure, but be aware that this is oil-based, and it will have a strong odor if installed indoors for a bit.

I aged my redwood deck for approximately 8 months. It is going to require some sanding from the scratches and damage that occurred this winter. How long do I need to wait to stain with twp 100 after sanding? What grit should I stop at to offer the best protection and penetration? And is your cleaner brightener step still required? Thank you

Sand with 60-80 grit paper, no finer. Clean and brighten afterward. Then, apply one coat of the TWP Stain.

I stained my new cedar deck & fence last summer after letting the wood season for about 8 months. I used the cleaner & brightener that you sell with your combo kits. We used transparent stain. We need to re-do it badly this summer as the stain is flaking off in several areas & has a ton of mold/mildew that will not come off with pressure washing. I am wondering if I need to strip then brighten this year if we plan to change to a semi-transparent stain. Here are pictures so you can see the issues. The first one actually shows where we pressure washed on the left compared to the right. The other shows where the stain has come off in spots. Any idea why it didn’t hold up in one Pacific NW wet season?

We would suggest stripping and brightening to get it even. It will be easy. Transparent stains will always fade faster then semi-transparent stains.

The deck must be “bone” dry before applying TWP 100 stain, as it is oil based and it would not adhere to a (water) wet (damp) deck.
