We will reply to your comment shortly· 05/03/2020We are planning to re-stain our cedar siding using the same semi-solid stain used approximately 9-10 years ago (prior to our purchase of home). We need to prep/ clean the wood first. Is RAD a good choice for cedar siding? Do we just follow the same directions as for a deck - i.e. mixing ratio, sprayer application, etc.? Thanks

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have fir railings on an Azek deck and some PVC posts, will this product damage the PVC posts or deck?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNo, it should not.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyOne follow-up, the fir railings have never been treated, were done just before the winter, and are starting to gray and have some black spots (possible mold?). I'm looking at this product to clean it up, instead of sanding with probably 100grit, before treating with likely TWP101. My questions are, can I use this instead of sanding? If so, would there be any benefit of sanding after using this product before treatment?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyDo not sand. Just clean and brighten: https://www.twpstain.com/gemini-s-restore-a-deck-cleaner-and-brightener-kit
Sanding reduces the TWP's ability to soak in.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI am trying to strip and stain my deck with the 1500 series stain. I was planning on using the deck stripper and brightener kit. Do I also have to use a deck cleaner as well? What order would I complete the cleaning aspect of it then? I know I would use the deck stripper before the brightener but what about the cleaner? What step would that be?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNo need for a cleaner if stripping.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a cedar railing that I stained last summer with TWP 100 . It was 1 year old when I did it. I used a deck cleaner and a wood brightener ( Citralic Brightner and Neutralizer) before applying the TWP 100. This year after the snow melted this is what im seeing Yuk! What do you think went wrong?
The vertical wood looks beautiful but the horizontal will probably have to be sanded off?-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNew wood requires another coat after about 12 months due to it being less absorbent: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/

We will reply to your comment shortlySee here about new wood: https://www.twpstainhelp.com/prepping-new-wood-for-twp-stains/
use the TWP 100 Series in a stain color for UV protection.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a powder coated aluminum railing system installed on my deck, with glass inserts. Is there any concern if the restore-a-deck contacts it? Will it react with the aluminum?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThre is no way to say for certain if an issue or not as not all aluminum deck products are manufactured the same. Typically not an issue but always test spot first.

We will reply to your comment shortlyWe have a cedar arbor and patio cover that we stained with TWP101 cedartone natural about 5 years ago. It has held up REALLY well with just few touch ups. However, in the covered portion, where the sun doesn't hit it, it has turned really dark. It seems to have some type of mold growing on it maybe. Will the restore a deck kit remove this? Can I apply this with a roller or brush instead of buying a sprayer for this small area? Is there anything I can do to keep it from turning so dark again?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou need the Stripper Kit to remove: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyIs there anything I can do to keep it from turning so dark again? Should I use a different type of stain in these shaded areas?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNo, that happens because of your environment. Nothing can be done to prevent it.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a new deck with pressure treated pine we installed last July. I'm ready to stain(using the TWP 1500 series). What cleaner would you recommend we use to prep the deck for staining?
I see the Restore a Deck kit but not sure we need the brightener. Thanks-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes, you need the brightener. Use the Gemini Restore Kit for prep.

We will reply to your comment shortlyThis is my 2 year old deck. PT lumber that's never been painted or stained before. You can see that theres some surface damage here. I've just ordered Restore-A-Deck and some TWP 200 stain (I'm in Canada) but I'm curious about other prep you recommend. Should I sand the whole surface first to remove this damage? What grit do you recommend?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyPersonally, I would just clean and brighten before staining. I doubt that after doing so, you'll see any need for sanding. Here's a progress pic of cleaning my 20 year old deck, that hadn't been cleaned in several years, with RAD cleaner. There's another pic farther down the thread of the finished product, several months later. The deck is a little dirty in the "finished" pic, but when it's hosed off, it looks nearly new.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou do not and for prep. You use the Gemini Restore Kit and that will remove the graying.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlySo all of the "fuzz" that you see will come off with the restore-a-deck alone?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThat is oxidation and most of it will come off with the Cleaner and pressure washing.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyOk, don't want to beat a dead horse here, but if some doesn't come off, is sanding going to be a problem for stain application? I want to do this right!
-
We will reply to your comment shortlySanding does not help the TWP to soak in. Best to not power sand. If needed, you can lightly use a hand or pole sander.

We will reply to your comment shortlyGoing to use the two step Restore a Deck product before staining on two year old non stained deck. Do I need to cover/protect vinyl siding on house along deck. Also have Black powcer coated smooth aluminum spindles in rails; do I need protect these also while using the Restore a Deck products?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyIt does not harm vinyl. As for the spindles, typically no issues but always test spot first as they are not all made the same way.

We will reply to your comment shortlymy deck is a year old. It gets afternoon sun and rain and heavy wind. We painted the railings and pergola with Behr semi transparent water base stain. The deck we started painting the edges and then decided to go with an oil base semi solid stain. Also one of the boards is cupped and holds water and has turned green. What should we use to clean prior to applying new stain?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou will have to fully remove the Behr and that will require stripping off what you can and then sanding the rest off. Brightener would be last.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI currently have TWP 1500 on my deck that was applied two years ago. I'm looking to clean/power wash and apply another coat. What product should I use for cleaning.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyUse the Gemini Restore Kit.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThis will not strip my current TWP stain correct? Just clean it properly for a top coat.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyIt preps it properly for a recoat. It may remove some of the current TWP if is it starting to fail. It really depends on how long it has been.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a 20 year old deck that is cracked and splintering. I am considering flipping the boards over instead of replacing them. What prep would I need to do before staining?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyUse the Gemini Restore Kit for prep.

We will reply to your comment shortlyWanting to stain my deck with TWP, is has Sikkens on it now, what doI need to do for prep?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou will need to remove the Sikkens: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyAny need to sand as well? Thanks for the quick reply
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyIf the Stripper cannot remove all the Sikkens based on how thick it is, then you will need to sand the rest off.

We will reply to your comment shortlyWe have been using Cabot oil-based semi-solid New Redwood stain on our deck. We usually use the true oil, but last year needed to use the low VOC since we live in Illinois. It didn't hold up. Our deck has pressure treated wood. We actually have 2 connecting decks. One is newt than the other. I would like to stick with a similar color. What would you recommend using? Thank You!
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyTWP cannot be applied over this stain. You would have to remove this and that would require power sanding as it cannot be stripped.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI recently cleaned my deck with a bleach based cleaner. It didn't work so I just purchased this kit. Can I use this shortly after using a bleach based cleaner? As in a couple of weeks?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes.

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a pressure treated swingset that I've used CWF-UV Redwood on for years. I want to change it over to a lighter color using TWP. Will the Restore-a-Deck product work - what do I need?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyPost a picture.
-
We will reply to your comment shortly
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThis coating cannot be stripped as it is too thick, like an opaque stain. The only way to get it down to the bare wood would be to sand it off.

We will reply to your comment shortlyWhat is the difference between restore a deck kit for $49.99 and restore a deck stripper/ brightener kit for $65
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThe $49.99 is a Cleaner and a Brightener.
