I am preparing to stain approx. 800sq ft of decking (almost 1200 when including railing and structural members). I plan to use the Semi-Solid Pro series. I have one deck that is in fairly poor condition (lots of sun exposure) and another that is in standard condition. Should I use 2 coats for the entire project or would the deck that is in better condition require only one coat of Pro Series? I purchased the home last year so I am not 100% certain when it was last stained. I do know that there was oil based on the deck previously. I believe it is standard decking, but there is a possibility that some of the deck is cedar.

All of the old stain needs to be removed first. After apply two coats wet on wet.

    Hello,
Im trying to decide on what size of the semi-solid to purchase, once it is back in stock. I have multiple projects plan where I would like to use this as an outdoor sealer (benches, siding, etc) however they are all not ready as of yet. What is the shelf life of this product? If I bought the 5 gallon size to use for future applications, will I have any trouble with this degrading after opening? Thank you!

The shelf life of a 5-gallon pail after being opened is about 12 months.

We're waiting to buy the TWP100 semi-solid stain which according to TWP website was supposed to be in stock mid-July (it's Jul 20 and still OOS). I have 2 questions, please: how much is the 5 gal. semi-solid? And is it worth waiting for the semi-solid stain, or should we just use the readily available semi-transparent for a deck that's in full sun? Thanks for your always prompt replies!

$274.95 per 5-gallon. It does give better UV protection when in full sun. We will not have it until August at some point.

Since all semi-solid colors are custom, is it possible to order a combination of heartwood and lighthouse (2 parts heartwood, 1 part lighthouse)?

No, it is not. You would have to mix that on your own.

After applying this, fast forward a few years when it’s time to redo it… will you need to remove all the old stain or simply apply it again when it’s time?

I have a deck which is old and it has been about 3 years since Thompson's seal was applied. Seems to have worn off by now. We have had to replace some boards. I see where you said new wood has to weather for at least 4 months before applying your semi-solid stain. How do I accommodate the old wood and the new. What would you recommend in this case and what type of prep?

After 4+ months, use the Gemini Kit on all the wood for prep.

What would be your most durable stain for a fence in Florida?  I won’t have access to some sections after the fence is installed

I am staining our siding using TWP 1501 cedartone.  we need to use 200 semi-solid on our deck to cover up a previous painter's mistake that put on a solid.  What color 200 would you recommend to match the 1501 on the siding?  SuperCedar?

TWP 200 Series is not a semi-solid can you cannot apply any of the TWP stains over a solid stain. You would have to sand off the solid stain fully.

I have some outdoor fir posts that were covered with a marine varnish, and  now have sun damage. How can I strip them to accept a TWP stain? Are the 1500 stains equally penetrating as the 100 series?

You cannot strip a marine varnish, you will have to sand it off.

What's the difference between the two colors? Is redwood just a lighter version of lighthouse? Or is one more purple/red while the other is more orange/red?

That would depend on if there is a previous stain on the wood or not? If so, then it will need to be removed.

stain my house in 1500 2 years ago with cedartone.   now that you have semi solid i want to cover that up with it.  my vertical siding is old and brittle and i don't think it will survive another strip.   can i go directly over without stripping?

No, you will need to strip and brighten for prep: https://www.twpstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper-brightener-kit-detail

what will happen if i don't strip and apply it anyway.  my wood seems very hungry to be replenished. it doesn't seem saturated with the 1500

You always have to prep when applying. By applying over the old TWP without proper prep can lead to drying issues, uneven color, and performance issues down the road.

Wood fillers will never blend with deck stains and will not work on exterior wood anyhow.

Hi I’m currently using your restore a deck kit to clean up my huge exterior dogwood pine privacy fence. I have purchased your twp 1500 in black walnut for our deck previously with good results. My dogs just scratch it up.
For the fence, I’m not a fan of any of the twp 1500 colors for it. I love the color options for the semi solid stain. Would you say one is better than the other doe the fence as far as longevity? Or just personal preference with color choice?
    Thank you - Taylor

I've got a ~10 year old pine deck in NC, stained 2 years ago in TWP100.  If I was reapplying TWP100, again, I'd just use the RAD cleaning and brightening kit, and topcoat.
Can I choose a similar color of TWP semi-solid, prep similarly with a clean&brighten, then top-coat with the TWP semi-solid? It might not be the most ideal, but would it work well enough? Or would it be a complete failure?
Trying to avoid stripping, since it never fully comes off -- even though your stripping products are better than most.

Correct on the prep if using the same color and series as last time. If using the Semi-Solid colors, then strip and brighten for prep. It will remove the TWP with no issues.

We have a deck stained with Twp 100 series pecan. It is time to re-stain. We would like to switch to the semi solid stain. What color is closest to Pecon and what products do you recommend for cleaning and prep of the wood?
