re: Mr
It would be best to remove the Sikkens first before applying the 1500 Series. This will allow the TWP to properly soak into the wood. TWP can be cleaned and recoated as needed. Nothing will stop rust stains for the nails. They should have used treated or galvanized nails. To remove the black rust stains, use a wood brightener.

Mr
Thanks for the opportunity to ask a question. I want to apply a longer lasting coating to the pine siding on my home which is barely over 1 yr old. Present finish is 1 coat of translucent Sikken SRD Cetol, natural oak color. It has held up only under covered areas that receive no sun. The other areas, (2 coated wet where applied on sunnier exposures, 1 coated elsewhere), are not peeling but are looking poorly and nail bleeding is present on the 1-coat areas. Questions: 1) After cleaning per your label instructions, what is the longest lasting of your products that you would recommend that is still semi-transparen t or translucent? (I presume the new 1500 series?) 2) Do I need to strip off the Sikkens first?. 3) Can I re-apply your recommendation two or 3 years from now without stripping it off first? Thanks for your help.

re: Disapointed that storm shield in peeling after the first year!
Most likely if it is peeling then either the wood was not properly prepped before application or the Storm Shield was over applied.

It would be easier to use a stain stripper to remove then start over.

Disapointed that storm shield in peeling after the first year!
What can I do fix this? Can I sand it down and recoat it? I stained my new deck last spring and it is peeling mostly on the flat parts where the sun hits it most. If needed I can send you pictures.

re: Homeowner
Storm Shield is a water based stain. Water based stains do not promote mildew growth as there is nothing in the stain (no oils) that \"feed\" the growth of mold/mildew \"in\" the stain. The issue is that mold/mildew can grow on \"top\" of any surface and stains can not prevent this from happening. I would apply 1 part bleach to 5 parts water to the shutters. Spray on with a garden sprayer and rinse off after a few minutes. This should get rid of the mold and should not harm the stain.

We purchased the Storm Shield in honeytone to stain four new cypress shutters about six months ago. We live in South Lousiana and it is humid here. The shutters are already showing tons of mildew-I can send pics if you want. Why did this happen? This product says it is mildew resistant and I would expect it to work for longer than six months. I applied it as instructed on the label.
